Give "Hollywood" by Bukowski a try. It's about him getting the film about him "Barfly" made. Well worth a read.

To be fair, you can apply that to most writers, though I get what you're saying. He is a bit of a one-trick pony. But as tricks go, I'm discovering that I really like it. There did at least appear to be a softer approach for Ham on Rye (which I'm strongly sensing is his best work). Factotum and Women look very similar to Post Office. After Factotum, I planned on reading 'Infinite Jest' but Christ, that thing's a whopper (and the print is really small). I'll find something good though.
