Brian De Palma (September 11, 1940, Newark, New Jersey, U.S.)
Brian De Palma was fortunate to be able to cast theatre actress Andra Akers in his debut feature, the experimental crime picture 'Murder A La Mod' (1968). Years later, Angie Dickinson would cast a similar visage to Akers for 'Dressed To Kill' (1980), while the casting of Dickinson's body double would inspire De Palma to create 'Body Double' (1984).
“I’ve been dealing with this all my career. Fortunately, now Quentin Tarantino has to deal with it, so I don’t have to deal with it anymore. Violence and women. He’s the director who has the biggest persona in that area. In fact, we had a conversation about that once, which was very funny.
I say the same thing over and over again. If I can create a sequence where you’re gazing at a woman or following a woman, it seems to me like a basic building block of cinema. I think it was Jean-Luc Godard who said, ‘The history of cinema is men photographing women.’

I mean, look at advertising. Every magazine cover is women. It draws the gaze of the man and the gaze of the woman, who’s looking at what she’s wearing. We look at women all the time. Look at the red carpet in Cannes — all they do is take pictures of women, and it dominates the coverage. It’s so obvious to me. It’s not something I discovered.”

Andra Akers would go on to appear in De Palma's third feature, 'The Wedding Party' (1969). Stock company member Jennifer Salt also appeared in both movies. In the early days, De Palma's acting company was anchored by versatile character actors like William Finley, Gerrit Graham, Allen Garfield, Charles Durning and Robert De Niro. For the second phase of his directorial career, De Palma added character players John Lithgow, Dennis Franz, Al Israel, Steven Bauer and Gregg Henry to the mix, bolstering a strong line-up of talent.
"When you're a filmmaker you become addicted, your family suffers, your friends suffer, to say nothing of what's going on on the set. It's an incredible way to show the impulse to view. Directors are constantly looking."

Steven Spielberg (December 18, 1946, Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S.)
Steven Spielberg spent the early part of his childhood in Ohio and his teenage years in Arizona where he directed a series of short subject films, culminating in the construction of his first feature-length film 'Firelight' (1964), a science-fiction adventure that would inspire the creation of 'Close Encounters Of The Third Kind' (1977).

An important development in Spielberg's career was his story contribution to John Erman's aviation adventure 'Ace Eli And Rodger Of The Skies' (1973) which provided a platform for qualified pilot Cliff Robertson to take to the skies. The cast included actress Pamela Franklin who was born in Yokohama, Japan and raised in East Asia.
“(The) Young Turks who might have been expected to ally themselves with women – Martin Scorsese, Brian De Palma, Francis Coppola, Paul Schrader, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg – burrowed into violent male-centered melodramas or retreated into a no less fantastic world of eternal adolescence.”

# Steven Spielberg's short subject film 'Amblin' (1968) lent its name to the production company Amblin Entertainment which was co-founded by Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall in 1980. 'Amblin' was shot by Allen Daviau who served as cinematographer on a number of Spielberg's feature films.
In Jerry Lewis' book 'The Total Film-Maker' (1971), he wrote of 'Amblin' : "The film rocked me back. Spielberg displayed an amazing knowledge of film-making as well as creative talent."
