The Zone of Interest – Oscar contender and early favourite for the Best Foreign Language award, for which it qualifies in spite of being a (mostly) British production because it’s spoken entirely in German. The subject matter is not the most joyful; the movie is about a nice German family living right next door to the Auschwitz concentration camp, of which the father is the commander. Unlike all other Holocaust movies, the horror of the extermination camps is only implied, never shown – but that doesn’t make it any less powerful. Tremendous piece of filmmaking.

Terrific film. Like no other Holocaust movie I've seen. Expertly crafted by Glazer and absolutely brilliant in the sound design department.
9/10

Thanks for the recommendation. Except for not showing any actual atrocities, the plot sounds a lot like "The Boy In The Striped Pajamas" (2008). Have you seen that one?

As far as the 10 Best Picture Oscar nominated films go, I've so far only seen Killers of the Flower Moon and Anatomy of a Fall. This is the one I'm most interested in seeing from the rest, and it's a pretty decent looking line up this year.

It's nothing like that film. Thank you. "The Zone of Interest" is now on my watch list. It's very important to watch it either in a cinema or with the volume cranked up as high as possible.

Excellent film. I liked the harsh, almost surreal hyper-formality of it. My #2 of 2023 so far, just behind the other Sandra Huller film
Glazer is a truly unique filmmaker
