It's been five years since the release of Jessica Pratt's third studio album, 'Quiet Signs' (2019). This week, she announced her return to music and plans for the summer, with her forthcoming album 'Here In The Pitch' (2024) having been completed. I believe it was recorded at Gary's Electric Studio in Brooklyn, New York, where 'Quiet Signs' was recorded.
'Jessica Pratt has announced her fourth album, Here in the Pitch, due May 3 via Mexican Summer (pre-order). “I became obsessed with figures emblematic of the dark side of the Californian dream while making this record,” Jessica says via press release. She also describes the album as “big panoramic sounds that make you think of the ocean and California.”
Just like Pratt’s earlier material, “Life Is” sounds like something that could’ve come out 60 years ago, but compared to her usual bare-bones folk vibes, this is more of a fleshed-out ’60s pop-style ballad that’s powered by an insistent timpani rhythm and multi-layered arrangements. “In a way, itʼs kind of a false flag,” Jessica says, and the press release then notes that “the rest of the record is just as emotionally intimate and stark as fans have come to expect.” But, she adds, “I also feel like itʼs a statement of intention.”
The album was made with multi-instrumentalist/engineer Al Carlson, keyboardist Matt McDermott, bassist Spencer Zahn, and percussionist Mauro Refosco (David Byrne, Atoms for Peace, etc), as well as contributions from Ryley Walker, Peter Mudge, and Alex Goldberg.'

Here in the U K, she'll be performing at Union Chapel in London, one of four shows that'll see her sharing the bill with Joanna Sternberg.
"I listened to all of Jessica Pratt’s records throughout the pandemic, which was so comforting."

At Stereogum, 'Life Is' was selected to be their song of the week (rounding out the top 5 were songs from Ekko Astral, DIIV, Waxahatchee and Kim Gordon).
'She’s back, baby. Jessica Pratt’s “Life Is,” the lead single from the esteemed California songwriter’s fourth album, is pitched at a slightly higher frequency than what we’ve heard from her in the past. “Time is time and time and time again,” she repeats throughout, her voice slipping in and around itself. Pratt has always been delicately smooth and quietly devastating, and she’s frequently been described as timeless, steeped in the folk traditions of the ’60s. “Life Is” is no different, with its shimmering simplicity, but it feels just ever so more expansive — in the subtly shifting landscape of Pratt’s music, that can feel like a whole lot.'
