As a way of showing that any human being is capable of doing something evil, THE ZONE OF INTEREST focuses mainly on what a Nazi, his wife and their children do at home every day in a way that's normal to the point of mundanity. It might seem like a boring description, but this approach can still work depending on how the characters are written. The (fictionalized version of the) Höss family are interesting individuals, but not enough to make the plot as engaging as it could've been. Is it fair to compare this to the previous two movies that Jonathan Glazer wrote and directed? On the one hand, the genres (and therefore, what the viewer is meant to take from them) are different. On the other hand, the atmosphere (and therefore, how the viewer is meant to feel) in all three are similar. While this *is* a well-made production overall, the content doesn't justify the running time (which isn't even that long). And I just can't help but to think of how the slow pacing and the surreal moments complemented the plot in UNDER THE SKIN and BIRTH, resulting in hypnotizing experiences.
6/10

He's one of the best directors around. I'm not sure why you'd compare his other films to this though - they're tonally completely different.
The Zone of Interest is an absolutely terrific film, pushing the boundaries of cinema.

Everyday living is predominantly mundane with bursts of upheaval and excitement to take us out and then brings us back in. Nothing mundane was happening on the other side of the walls, only evil. Headwig was dead-set on retaining what she saw as an idyllic life, while her monster husband took part in human atrocities that she also endorsed for the comfortable survival of her own family. This was also something she used as a tool to vent with due to her bigotry.
The film didn't keep us stuck in the Hoss family home and grounds, the shot composition and sound design, (which is a major part of the technical production), were brilliant and the film gave us insight into the horrors Hoss was preparing for and administered. The juxtaposition of the fine treatment this psychopath received, (and didn't deserve), and the treatment we know his victims received was unsettling and disturbing.
The hell on earth Hoss was responsible for creating was just an earshot away. This was the point and the brisk running time of only just over 100mins was perfect and managed to convey its message loud and clear, well to those that aren't tone deaf.
If there is a considered pretentious aspect to the film, is that the film for the most part relies on the viewers own knowledge of history. If one doesn't know much or anything about the Holocaust and concentration camps, then the film would perhaps be dull or even confusing.
I haven't seen any of Glazer's other films, but what I found he represented here, was a unique and original take on a blight on humankind that need never be forgotten, nor ever erased.

History and any importance associated with can still fade. There would be many today that aren’t aware or even care to know. 8Billion assholes on the planet. One can’t assume everyone knows what any other individual may know.
