Buying a gift for a friend. He's a Scotch drinker but I know nothing about it. Wouldn't want to spend more than $100. Any Scotch drinkers out there with suggestions? Glenlivet is considered good and has some varieties under 100. Check the reviews. I am not a scotch expert, but I like it. |

Depends on what they like. Despite the above comments, Islays have their fans, but are not cheap.
Start with Oban and Talisker.
Glenlivet is OK, but Glenlivet 12 is the "vanilla milkshake" of Scotch (it is a fantastic cocktail Scotch, but what makes it a fantastic cocktail Scotch also make it not stand out). For a gift, I would go with something else.

Avoid Islay whiskies …they’re rotten! i.e. Laphroaig Lagavulin Bowmore Ardbeg Bruichladdich Bunnahabhain Caol Ila Kilchoman Lagavulin? Yeah thats pretty good but takes some adjusting. Definitely not your first-timer whisky. Hell, at that price you may as well go for The Macallan-cant go wrong there. A classic Jameson is pretty decent for its price though imo |

I don't know what's considered reasonably priced but Oban 14 year is pretty good and $60 for a bottle.
