Filming began on this movie 60 years ago today; all of the footage from the first day was destroyed, according to IMDb. What happened?

Camera malfunction.

Lawrence of Arabia. Camera malfunction. NTA; maybe in that case, it was a possible camel malfunction.

A Hard Day's Night.
I'll leave the story's details to you, except to say that poor guy - along with the producers - probably wished he'd had a different haircut (or could have run faster).

I looked it up so won't reveal the answer. Someone who comes up with it the fair way can get the credit. Just want to say that I absolutely love this movie. EDIT: Doghouse6 posted the correct movie while I was typing my response. Congratulations, Doghouse!

A member of the crew, attempting to evade screaming fans at the train station who apparently believed the crew members could be Beatles in disguise, dropped the cans of negatives as he tried to run away. The studio probably wasn't too upset about the loss; they considered the production more of a quickie film to promote a soundtrack album of this flash-in-the-pan group before they faded into obscurity.

Somebody had to have picked up those cans. Somewhere in England, there may be a closet, attic, basement or garage containing never-seen (or even developed) Beatles footage.

I remembered hearing the story about the footage and was sure of the film, but I must confess to having looked up the start date of production to verify that it fit marianne48's criteria. I'll punish myself by enduring an extra scotch-on-the-rocks tonight.

It is yet another I thought would be easy but seems to be stumping all comers.

It is yet another I thought would be easy but seems to be stumping all comers. I pondered it, but the child doesn't look familiar and I can't quite make out what the blob-like object sharing the frame with him is (and the velvet ropes aren't offering me much help either). I gathered from your clue to Claudius it was released sometime around 1980, but I have a feeling the film may be one I've never seen. Seems to suggest something with a supernatural theme or atmosphere, but I guess you'll have to include me in the forest of the stumped.
