There are two episodes where Captain Kirk says there are only 12 like her in the fleet.
I've never understood that. Does the mean there are ONLY 12 or 13? 12 like her usually means 12-more like her. 12 + Enterprise = 13. At that time period of these episodes. The US Navy has 13 aircraft carriers in the fleet. Star Trek always modeled after the US Navy.

Actually the Enterprise is a Constitution class ship, apparently the first of this class put into service, hence the 1701 designation.

Most people recognize the Enterprise. They would not recognize the Constitution as the first in that series of star ships. Now how many were there? And what is the significance of 1700/1701?

Well I did some digging. This one web site I came across said there are/were 15.

I haven't the foggiest.
And I say that as a stalwart and steadfast Star Trek fan.

At the time Kirk said it there were twelve of the Constitution class. Evidently three more were built later.

As commander of the Enterprise, Kirk should have stated that there were no other ships like his in the Confederation and that it was the finest vessel, bar none, in the Galaxy.
