On 20 March 1974, Princess Anne was ambushed by an armed kidnapper as she travelled by car to Buckingham Palace. The attack was thwarted by the bravery of a number of people, including her police bodyguard Inspector Jim Beaton, who was shot three times during the incident. Ian Ball planned to abduct the young princess and hold her ransom. He was later prosecuted for Jim’s attempted murder, as well as other offences. Five decades on, Inspector Beaton has been reflecting on that day. www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-scotland-68610426

I didn't realise until I looked it up just now that Ian Ball, the guy who tried to kidnap her, is still alive and has been in Broadmoor for all this time.
Apparently he went on hunger strike about 20 years ago and said he was a political prisoner, if it hadn't been a royal he would have been free by now. Although shooting that policeman several times probably didn't help his cause very much!
