29% of the vocabulary of English comes from French which is more than the percentage from Germanic languages, 26%.
Although only one of the 100 most commonly written or spoken words in the language is derived from French, people.

What they mean is they didn’t fully succeed in conquering the language and now they’re desperately trying to protect French from outside (as in English) influences.

Considering when most French words came into English, perhaps it's modern French that is pronounced badly.

French is a lovely sounding language, but their accents ponce up their English.
