I went to a Japanese restaurant in town and had a sushi platter. They had a 25 piece on the menu which I no doubt could have demolished but I would be too embarrassed to order that. I like how casual Japanese restaurants are. Back row; salmon & tuna, roe (I think), squid or octopus. Front row; prawn, eel (unagi), tuna, salmon, egg. Had some warm sake as well.

That’s awesome, Mill. I love fish eggs. I think that’s salmon roe; it’s the larger soft roe called ikura. That platter looks delicious. 😋 Hot sake with sushi 🍱 is a favorite. I’ve been told fancy sake is only served cold; lucky for my wallet, the cold stuff doesn’t agree with my tummy. 😁

I made the mistake of picking up the roe sideways so some of it fell out. I'll probably go again this week.

It’s great you’re going again; it looks like a really lovely place, and that they served everything as it’s meant to be (at least by the standards of the Japanese-owned places here that I’ve visited). I hope the runaway roe was recaptured by you and eaten! I love nigiri 🍣 sushi (pieces vs rolls) and while it is meant to be eaten in one bite, ikura nigiri is the one that challenges me the most but you can’t gnaw through the cylinder of sea weed, so you just have to go after it! True confession: I cheat and scoop out some of the ikura and eat it first so I don’t choke and die on it all at once. 🤣

Not the best name, perhaps, but i've been there a few times and always enjoyed it. The ramen is a fav of mine. Glad to hear it was served properly, I often wonder if i'm consuming it properly. I agree about the one bite thing, it can be a mouthful.

Ask them if they do inside out rolls with tobiko (smaller fish roe) on the outside of the rice. That usually comes with a slightly larger amount of fish in the middle wrapped in seaweed, then rice outside of that rolled in tobiko which adds a nice bit of salt and extra flavor, or the outside can be rolled in sesame seeds. 😋

Sounds very nice. I was a bit grossed out by the idea of fish eggs at one time, but i'm used to it now.

When you get the rice on the outside of a roll, you gotta be quick with your soy sauce dip or it’ll all fall apart. Don’t wanna lead you astray!

Intriguing, I looked on the menu and they have tobiko salad and tobiko gunkan, no mention of rolls, but I can ask about it.

It’s the sort of thing you ask for. … to give you an idea of what it looks like. This appears to be a salmon, avocado and cucumber roll with tobiko on the outside. Hmm, I think it has cream cheese in, as well. 😒 Philly rolls have that. Don’t get Philly roll, or California roll; they’re not sushi they’re abominations!! 😝
