Forget the triggered snowflakes for a second and concentrate on the character of Esmeralda. From what I can gather she is not a gypsy. She was stolen by gypsies. She was born in France. So my guess in France at that she might not be a person of color? I don't know. Back to the snowflakes and my question for them would be, if an African-American was cast in the role would they have a problem? I'm sure there is very little chance Esmerelda is African. Mother and daughter were thrilled that a musical with a leading role of a female of color would be performed on the school's stage. They would be keeping an eye on this production, Eliza wrote in the letter in late November.

A white actress was cast in the role of Esmeralda, a Romani gypsy living in 15th-century Paris.
Maddi Carroll, a 17-year-old senior at Ithaca High School and member of Students United Ithaca, was cast in the ensemble and quit in November due to the casting of Esmeralda.
“It shows you that theater wasn’t made for you," said Maddi, who is African-American. I guess the liberal sjw rule that any fictional character can be played by anyone regardless of race, gender, ethnicity etc went out the window in this case. I guess what they really mean is any white fictional character can and should be played by a person of color. Never mind that Esmeralda stolen by gypsies from a French couple in 19th century France is probably white.

Funny thing is Quasimodo is actually a gypsy. When Esmerelda was stolen from the French prostitute by the gypsies they replaced her with one of their own babies (the deformed Quasimodo).
