"Margot Robbie is passing Go!
Following the major box-office success of Barbie, the 33-year-old actress and producer is making a Monopoly movie under her LuckyChap banner, alongside fellow company heads Josey McNamara and Tom Ackerley, Robbie's husband.
Based on the classic board game of the same name, the upcoming movie will be distributed by Lionsgate and also produced by Hasbro Entertainment.
"I could not imagine a better production team for this beloved and iconic brand than LuckyChap," Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Adam Fogelson said in a statement on Wednesday, April 10. "They are exceptional producers who choose their projects with great thought and care, and join Monopoly with a clear point of view."
Fogelson added, "We are tremendously excited to be working with the entire LuckyChap team on what we all believe can be their next blockbuster."
"Monopoly is a top property — pun fully intended," LuckyChap said in a statement. “Like all of the best IP, this game has resonated worldwide for generations, and we are so excited to bring this game to life alongside the wonderful teams involved at Lionsgate and Hasbro.”
Hasbro Entertainment Head of Film Zev Foreman said, "As one of the most iconic games in the world, Monopoly provides an incredible platform for storytelling opportunities."
"We are thrilled to have the unique vision of LuckyChap and Lionsgate alongside us to bring this historic piece of popular culture to the big screen," Foreman added.
Barbie, LuckyChap's most recent release, earned more than $1.4 billion at the global box office, cementing its place as the top-grossing movie of 2023.
The Greta Gerwig-directed flick was nominated for eight Academy Awards at last month's ceremony and took home Best Original Song, for the Billie Eilish ballad "What Was I Made For?""
