i am not angry.
i've been worse.
just sad at the educational system we have and not amused at being called a racist for pointing it out.
it may not have been great back in the 80s but it was pretty damn good compared to today's standards.
I went to private Catholic schools from K-12, sobI don't have a lot of reference for Public Schools.
public schools for me were fantastic. the buildings were dilapidated but the teachers cared, the parents were supportive, and most the kids were willing to learn.
today the schools are like mini palaces but the teachers are worn thin because they're seen as babysitters not instructors. too many parents could not care less, and their kids tend to be massively disruptive. that'll wear anyone down.
why the hell ARE we spending $20m on new schools when all we churn out are kids who cannot read??

Oh no I do see your general topic ones, it just seems if it's about specifics you usually use links to VA,Balt/MD, or DC. I'm pretty sure I've seen more but those 3 stick out a lot with you for me. Hell Might be me just noticing it though you may do a lot more a few just caught my eye so I look for them. Sometimes I go into your education posts saying to myself will 0 proficient Baltamorian readers/writers or mathematicians make it this time or will it be DC people:)
let's be fair and think on this.
yes it is in baltimore or parts of chicago or parts of L.A where too many kids are failing.
at the end of the day - does it matter?
just because it is in these "depressed areas" that we just accept that 80%+ of these kids are functionally illiterate?
are we supposed to care only when it's in "non-depressed areas"?
i don't think so.
THAT would be racist.
you see where i am coming from?
Yeah I see it but I also read a lot of your posts. So like I said I don't think you are a racist. I think you care about youth as a whole and yours in particular. You don't want them shafted. And I agree with most of what you say its just I have no answers in the broad abstract and only a few in the fine concentrated problems. When we see money per student dropped in places where it's bad and it's a lot more than where it's not it does bring up feeling of eunni about the whole problem. Dissatisfaction, Depression, and Lack of Motivation. In 20 years here is what I've seen works. Stability. If we can get the kid going to the same place, after school special, or at least household it helps. If you can't get a student to same physical address, but can get them going to same guardian every day it helps. Have said adult just act interested. They don't even have to be interested most of the time just feign it. If you can't get a guardian to be interested or act interested any adult who can do it on a regular basis will help. Food absolutely matters. The difference between a kid that ate yesterday at 1pm and no supper + small breakfast vs a kid that had 3 meals yesterday and knows there is 3 meals today is tremendous. Homework matters. Young Vassaggo would hate me for saying that. It really does help a bit in retention, but it also gives the kid the ability to realize what should be prioritized and then allows him to do so. Which is more important imho. If we can't get a parent/guardian to take responsibility then other parents, teachers, aides, tutors, admin, society etc has to pick up the slack. I've seen lack of caring infect a class before. 1 or 2 kids who had high social skills and high self preservation skills but no adult supervision formed a clique and it grew from that nodule. IF others don't pick up the slack you and yours will get hurt that share facilities/classes even if they try to and avoid them at all cost. Still happens everyday.

Perhaps after the awful democrats are removed, the amazingly intelligent Betsy DeVos will return to once again show the world how education should be done.

But I highlighted the bit about food security beciase I think that is a big part of the problem with disenfranchised youth. And taking away free/reduced lunch programs will only make it worse.

But I highlighted the bit about food security beciase I think that is a big part of the problem with disenfranchised youth. And taking away free/reduced lunch programs will only make it worse. I've flipped many a C/D student to A/B by just going over their completed homework before they leave my after school program at 5pm. Of Course at 4pm we have Afternoon Tea called that from a kid who was reading the Hobbit for me. Hot or Cold Drink, sandwich and crisps/chips. They went through an anglophile streak when The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings got popular with the groups around 10 years ago. Which is around the time the first Hobbit came out. So my kids can be sure that at least 5 days a week they'll have 3 meals a day. During the summer that drops to 3 as I can only keep it open 3 days a week. These kids were never really c/d students they were just underappreciated a/b students. I have a lot of failures in my roughly 20 years of doing this, but I have a shit ton of successes. I get kids into college, community college, tech programs, mentorships, trade school, or just employment. And taking a little from AA I get them to come back to volunteer and help out after they graduate high school usually during summer. Some during School year if they are going local and I know people at their Schools. (Which I know a lot)

It might not be the lefties changing testing to allow lesser intelligent people get higher grades?
Since when?

i have never been against free school lunches and even school breakfasts and now in some places school dinners...
i may be only grudgingly for it because it really is the responsibility of the parents first and foremost for breakfasts and dinners and will allow certain parents to abuse the system but i'll pay my fair share because i grew up poor and understand food plays a large part in growing up.

take out the lefties part and just read what is bolded.
does that practice not bother you at all?
because THAT is what leads to 80%+ of black American 8th graders to be functionally illiterate.
you think on that as you sit on your high horse and pass judgement upon me.
