Now here's a tasty tidbit offered by director John Schlesinger in the book Hollywood: The Oral History. "Some script reader at MGM suggested Elvis Presley would be good for Midnight Cowboy...if it was turned into a musical. And someone at United Artists, for whom I did the picture seriously said 'Make Ratzo Sammy Davis Jr. and you have a hit!'"
You know something........I'd go see that!

At one point in life I would have seen it for laughs and to see just how horrified I could be.
The lady on the bus who asks Joe Buck if he has any gum for her children was Linda Davis, a friend of mine at college. She was a theater major and we acted in plays together, so I have a tiny bit of personal interest in the movie. BTW, she gave up her movie asperations shortly thereafter and was a school teacher for about 20 years in the Mesquite, Texas school district. There's some trivia most people don't know!

Elvis and Sammy harmonizing on Everybody's Talkin.' We'd get that much out of it.
What about I'm Walkin' Here as a jaunty little street-song-and-dance for Sammy, with a tap routine on the roof of the cab (it worked for Ruby Keeler). And a satirically reverent musical tribute to John Wayne for Joe (a la Bye Bye Birdie's to Ed Sullivan).
Wheee! Look at me: I'm a boneheaded, late-'60s studio exec (and started the Sunday cocktail hour a tad too early).
