After reading, hearing about, seeing so many stories of people taking rides with someone only to go missing and/or being found murdered, with the killer never being identified, I had the idea that it should be taught in safety videos or lessons or whatever thatz for safety's sake, people taking a ride with a stranger should note the license plate number and text it to a friend, letting the driver know they are doing so and why. I think this is a asimple step that could save lives, but every time I've talked about it with people, thet tell me it's crazy, and that if they gave a ride to a stranfer and the person said they wanted to send the plate number to a friend, they'd kick them out of the car.

It's a sensible idea but difficult to put into practice, I would say.

I would worry the hitchhiker was trying to scam me .. or his friend was waiting up ahead with a note of my reg. no. to waylay me.

Or like, don't hitchhike, perhaps. Use public transport.

Not just hitchhiking, but any kind of transport including Uber, Lyft, Yellow Cab, etc.

It's been a long time since I've seen anybody hitchhike. I didn't think it was done anymore.

Anyone want to buy a fake number plate? No thanks. I know how to steal them. Some criminals don’t steal things because theft goes against their moral code. It’s like how murderous thugs really dislike child molesters.

When they got to Venmra it was pretty soon after the heavy dinner, so Doc only stopped for beer. The hitch- hiker hadn’t spoken once. Doc pulled up at a roadside stand. “Want some beer?” “No,” said the hitch-hiker. “And I don't mind saying I think it’s not a very good idea to drive under the influence of alcohol. It’s none of my business what you do with your own life, hut in this case you’ve got an automobile, and that can be a murderous weapon in the hands of a drunken driver.” At the beginning Doc had been slightly startled. “Get out of the car,” he said sofdy. ‘What?” ‘Tm going to punch you on the nose,” said Doc. “If you aren’t out of this car before I count ten. One — ^two — three " The man fumbled at the door catch and backed hurriedly out of the car. But once outside he howled : “I’m going to find an officer. I’m going to have you arrested.” Doc opened the box on the dashboard and took out a monkey wrench. His guest saw the gesture and walked hurriedly away.
