But, I ask, what if Axolotls had been considerably more fortunate in some past era. Suppose that some mutant fungus/bacteria/virus had evolved which was deadly to air breathing vertebrates. There would still be fish, worms and insects to consume. Axolotls could regain the air breathing capability of its ancestors and become the dominant vertebrates in rivers, lakes, forests and in salt water.
