Roman Gabriel, one of the great quarterbacks, has died at the age of 83. Pretty sure Jim Brown said he was one of the best he ever played against.
R.I.P.

He was my favorite player. Fell in love with the Rams. They went 11-1-2 in 1967, beating out the Unitas Colts, also 11-1-2 for the Coastal Division title at a time when only the 4 division winners got playoff spots due to a 1-0-1 record against them. Receivers Jack Snow, Bernie Casey, TE Billy Truax, Les Josephson at RB, Fearsome Foursome of Deacon Jones, Merlin Olsen, Roger Brown, and Lamar Lundy, Maxie Baughan and Jack Pardee at LB, Irv Cross at CB. George Allen coaching.
Huge win in their penultimate game vs GB when Tony Guillory blocked a punt down 24-20 with 55 seconds left and no timeouts left. Claude Crabb returned it to the 5. Gabriel to Casey won it, 27-24. Then they beat the Colts to take the division.
Unfortunately, they lost to the Pack in the playoffs, who went on to beat the Cowboys on Starr's sneak and the John Madden Raiders in SB II. They laughably won "The Playoff Bowl" consolation game 30-6 over the Browns for 3rd Place.
I bought APBA Football that year and replayed the entire season. Rams, of course, won it after the Cardinals upset Dallas in the playoffs.
