the first adaptation of what Stephen King calls his scariest book. The movie does a lot right with some creepy atmosphere, shooting on location in Maine, and translating the main morality tale of the story in a well-done way, but it is let down by some absolutely horrendous acting (who is this awful actor Dale Midkiff and why is he the lead in a major Paramount Pictures production?) which leads to some scenes coming across as unintentionally funny. A remake is 2019 improves the film acting wise but is kind of worse off in all other areas. Maybe in 2049 we will finally get the definitive version of this story on screen.

I saw it a few times and remember liking it.
