Thousands of Israelis protested in Tel Aviv on Sunday at several locations. The largest protest was the one calling for elections on Kaplan Street, while a demonstration of hostages' families called for elections outside the Kirya military headquarters, and families of hostages rallying for a hostage deal at Hostage Square outside the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
TEXT:
TEL AVIV (Reuters) - Thousands of Israeli demonstrators took to the streets on Saturday to call for new elections and demand more action from the government to bring the hostages held in Gaza home, in the latest round of protests against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The protests have continued as the war in Gaza moves through its seventh month and amid growing anger over the government's approach to the 133 Israeli hostages still held by the Islamist movement Hamas.
Surveys indicate that most Israelis blame Netanyahu for the security failures that led to the devastating attack by Hamas fighters on communities in southern Israel on Oct. 7.
Israel's longest-serving prime minister has repeatedly ruled out early elections, which opinion polls suggest he would lose, saying that to go to the polls in the middle of a war would only reward Hamas.
"We're here to protest against this government that keeps dragging us down, month after month; before October 7th, after October 7th. We kept going down in a spiral," said Yalon Pikman, 58, who attended a march in Tel Aviv.
Hamas-led gunmen seized 253 people during the Oct. 7 attack that killed around 1,200, according to Israeli tallies. Some hostages were freed in a November truce, but efforts to secure another deal appear to have stalled.
Netanyahu has pledged to continue the Israeli campaign in Gaza, which local health authorities say has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians, until all the hostages are brought home and Hamas has been destroyed.
Last week's attack on Israel by waves of Iranian drones and missiles shifted attention from the conflict in Gaza and for many relatives of the remaining hostages there is a growing feeling that time is running out.
"My mother is really strong. She's holding us together," said Sharone Lifschitz, 52, whose 85 year-old mother, Yocheved Lifshitz, was among the hostages released in November but whose father, Oded, remains in captivity.
"But as time passes, the weight of what is happening - the way that those who could have returned them failed to return them - the sheer weight of that is weighing more and more on her shoulders. And her hope, too, is diminishing."

I like how parliamentary countries can just call for elections at any time and not on a schedule like here in the USA....the former is more democratic and provides the stability needed when there are competent leaders in place....

Yes, it didn't take long for our Left to forget what happened on 10.7 and that most of the victims were from their camp.

Yes, it didn't take long for our Left to forget what happened on 10.7 and that most of the victims were from their camp. The left was targeted on Oct 7th for the worst atrocities and Hamas knew who they were, according to some of the materials found in the tunnels. One of the plans for Oct 7th was to occupy part of southern Israel in this strong left wing area and to rule over Jews who were known as people who hated the current Israeli government. Hamas expected these Jews to accept Hamas rule. Hamas and their civilians who followed them into Israel on Oct 7th raped, mutilated and killed them instead. It’s heartbreaking regardless of their politics, of course. Israelis have been quite shaken and the grief will go on for a long time.

The 1000s are asking for elections. It doesn’t mean they’ll get their wish. Only the ruling government itself can make this happen and our current ruling government won’t go for it at the request of these 1000s. We have 7.3 million Jews here, not just 1000s.

That creep Netanyahu should have done this on 8 October: The Israeli military's intelligence chief has resigned, saying he took responsibility for the failures before Hamas's attack on Israel on 7 October. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Major General Aharon Haliva would retire once his successor was selected. In a letter, he acknowledged that his intelligence directorate "did not live up to the task we were entrusted with". He is the first senior figure to step down over the attack, which were the deadliest in Israel's history. Israeli military and intelligence officials missed or ignored multiple warnings before hundreds of Hamas gunmen breached the Gaza border fence that day and attacked nearby Israeli communities, military bases and a music festival. i.e. resigned himself. He probably doesn’t even think he shares part of the blame for missing the attack. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-68873227Horrible person.

That creep Netanyahu should have done this on 8 October: Tell assholes like the BBC to mind their own business because Israel is going to put a stop to Hamas whether the world likes it or not.
America has over 200,000 Jewish American-Israeli citizens in Israel and some of them were killed on October 7th while others were kidnapped.
America and Israel are allies so it was the right thing to do for America to side heavily with Israel in the war against Hamas.
The Prime Minister doesn't personally watch the ground movements in Gaza. It's the job of the IDF and other Intel agencies in Israel.
Israel kept to a cease fire while it appeared that Hamas was keeping to it, as well.
Israel will never trust a cease fire again with these people - this is what the Prime Minister should make clear to the world.
There were politicians who wanted Hamas wiped out years ago. It wouldn't have been possible to do this after rocket attacks where few or no people in Israel were killed from them. Even with 1200 people in Israel slaughtered, it's difficult to get the world to accept Jewish self-defense.
So Bibi did what he was elected to do and the BBC can go jump itself if they don't like it.

Israel's President Herzog (a very liberal politician who was selected for this ceremonial post) has asked the other countries in the world to stop trying to interfere with Israel's internal politics.
He asked this today.
The BBC can go to hell.

President Herzog (uber-liberal) is asking other countries today to back out of Israel's internal politics.
It's not any of your business. Leave us the hell alone about this.

It may not be the BBC’s business, but It IS the US’s business because we fund it, and the US gets dragged into whatever Israel does.

America supports the Palestinians for a state although one of their new-and-improved Palestinian Authority politicians (something America asked them to do) started out his job by saying that Allah had turned Jews into apes and pigs. This is the "improved" Palestinian Authority.
Israel's political system (as papamihel says) is messed up but it's something we have to handle ourselves.
Pushing Jews around and telling us what to do is tempting for a great many people.
Ultimately, Jews are western civilization's ancient parents (one of them, anyway) and we have to manage our internal situation ourselves.
America has reasons to support us with military aid but it doesn't make Israel anyone's slave.
