www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/apr/23/several-feared-dead-attempt-cross-channelSorry, but I’m not going to pretend to be sad. I feel sorry for the child. Her parents killed her. Five people including a child have died in an attempt to cross the Channel near the town of Wimereux, south of Calais, French authorities have said. The prefect’s office in Pas-de-Calais said that at about 5am on Tuesday, a small boat “carrying more than 110 people” had departed near the Plage des Allemands at Wimereux. “After at first hitting a sandbank, the boat had continued to sea,” the prefect’s office said. A provisional assessment reported five deaths, of three men, a woman and a child, reportedly aged four, and one person slightly injured. The Calais prefect had travelled to the scene. The public prosecutor at Boulogne-sur-Mer has opened an inquiry “to shed light on the circumstances of this dramatic event”. The incident comes hours after Rishi Sunak’s government passed legislation to allow it to deport asylum seekers who arrive in the UK on small boats to Rwanda. Sunak said the “tragic” reports of deaths in the Channel showed why the Rwanda plan was needed. “It’s just a reminder of why my plan is so important because there’s a certain element of compassion about everything that we’re doing,” he told reporters. We want to prevent people making these very dangerous crossings. If you look at what’s happening, criminal gangs are exploiting vulnerable people. “They are packing more and more people into these unseaworthy dinghies, you’ve seen an enormous increase in the numbers over the past few years. This is what tragically happens when they push people out to sea and that’s why for matter of compassion more than anything else. We must actually break this business model.” The UK home secretary, James Cleverly, said on X: “These tragedies have to stop. I will not accept a status quo which costs so many lives. This government is doing everything we can to end this trade, stop the boats and ultimately break the business model of the evil people-smuggling gangs, so they no longer put lives at risk.” www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/apr/23/several-feared-dead-attempt-cross-channel

Sorry, but I’m not going to pretend to be sad. I bet the people smugglers being paid lots of money to put them in unseaworthy boats in the first place are even less sad than you are. Anybody who opposes measures to undermine the smugglers' business model by deporting boat people to Rwanda and making it crystal clear to anybody thinking of putting their life in danger that the same thing will happen to them, has blood on their hands.

Not sure about the Rwanda plan. The cost per migrant sent there is going to be utterly ridiculous. It’s really just window dressing by a government desperate to do anything to hold onto power.

I don't particularly like it either, but so far it has been the only suggestion on how we might put the people-smugglers out of business and stop them, rather than us, deciding who is able to come and live here. If we can't deport them back to France where they came from, then what other choice is there?

That's why we should focus on stopping the smugglers. They don't care about women and children, only about profit.

It's ultimately the West interfering in the Middle East, including enabling extremists in Syria, which causes these problems.

It's ultimately the West interfering in the Middle East, including enabling extremists in Syria, which causes these problems. No it ain't. It is about folk in Bongo Bongo land living with their arses out of their trousers and wanting a better deal. So they are moving to the West to find it.

I just wonder: We did discuss this all to great detail already half a year ago, didn't we? Now many findings from then seem to be forgotten again.

Whatever "solutions" I had presented (I don't remember) my main point of my analysis was that Rwanda is not a solution, it's not even a deterrent. And I can now even call conhome to help giving evidence: A Wish called Rwandaconservativehome.com/2024/04/24/a-wish-called-rwanda/ That is the part of that article I agree with, in the rest there are some questionable and dubious statements.
