The former Labour minister and welfare campaigner Frank Field has died at the age of 81. Lord Field, who dedicated his career in Westminster to tackling social issues, including child poverty and modern slavery, served as an MP for 40 years. He had been living with terminal cancer for several years, and revealed his diagnosis in 2021 when his speech was read out in the House of Lords to support a change in the law on assisted dying. Field was one of the longest-serving MPs in the Commons, only losing his seat in the 2019 general election after forming his own party. A family statement, issued by his parliamentary office, said: “Frank Field (Rt Hon Lord Field of Birkenhead, CH) has died at the age of 81 following a period of illness. .. www.theguardian.com/politics/2024/apr/24/frank-field-former-labour-minister-and-anti-poverty-campaigner-dies-aged-81Top bloke.

Frank Field, the guy who was hung out to dry by his own party after his proposed "think the unthinkable" welfare reforms were thoroughly shat on and forced his resignation. Who knows - perhaps I have my rose-tinted specs on, but if he had been left to get on with his job, then might the welfare system not have gone completely off the rails and turned into the dysfunctional and sclerotic clusterfuck that it has now become? Or would not even Frank have been able to prevent our headlong rush towards a culture of victimhood and entitlement now endemic in our brave new client society? I guess we will never know. RIP.
