Did Tail Gunner Joe realize that it wasn't illegal to be a Communist in 1936 (or 1952 for that matter). A lot of people though the Great Depression was the death knell for Capitalism. And the horrors of the Bolsheviks hadn't really been made public yet.
The Red Scare started in 1919 and has waxed and waned ever since. Absolutely, the Capitalists felt threatened by the Communist, as well they should’ve been, but to think it could ever take hold in the USA was ludicrous. No industrialized, democratic nation has freely voted in Communism, but they have voted in Fascism. The fearmongering over it has served its purpose, driving this nation further into Fascism and the waiting hands of the oligarchs with each cycle. Anything that threatens nervous, insecure people can be used to discredit anyone who speaks against them. It is a great weapon to carry around. Anti-Communism in America is a ghost dance to be in reality anti-civil rights, anti-women’s rights, anti-gay rights, anti-education, anti-social safety net, pro-Bible, and whatever else is in the revolving bottomless pit of Republican Fear and Greed.

Communists are pretty damn bad, caused a lot of death and misery, more than fascists did.

The post WWI Red Scare was due to the takeover of Russia and the near takeovers of Germany and Hungary. But the big fear was that the Communists would take over the Unions. The IWW would merge with the AFL and control most of the industrial workers. The post WWII Red Scare was the fact that there had been some Soviet agents in key positions. Mostly the Manhattan Project, Julius Rosenberg and Klaus Fuchs. And Alger Hiss bamboozled FDR into letting Europe go to Stalin.
It's comic so see people swallow Marxism because there is one uncomfortable truth. You cannot have a classless society. Someone has to dig ditches and clean toilets. Can you try and make their lot in life better, certainly. But you can't alter the fact that someone has to do the unpleasant work

American capitalism post-Gilded Age Depression, but pre-organized labor was on shaky ground. But the consumerism and credit boom of the 1920s started changing the attitudes of Americans toward socialism. Even the Depression didn’t drive Americans into any real revolutionary action. As such, the anti-communist rhetoric turned to defending traditional American “Christian” values. The photos above speak for themselves. Today’s rhetoric of the “cultural Marxist” slur which takes care of everything MAGA fears and hates.
