Did you listen to it? It was both fascinating and illuminating. Came across in my feed by chance just as it was starting.
I eventually turned the sound off on the IPL cricket match I was watching and listened to the immunity hearing live through ear phones. I was more involved in the hearing than the cricket eventually,.
The three liberal judges and, I think, Amy Coney Barrett, at least, will vote against the absolute presidential immunity trump's lawyer is asking for.
IMO, though, it's going to be something Roberts and the rest of the court, want to ponder for all sorts of reasons - none of them urgent, but Brett Cavanaugh - he's a cunt.) pontificated on about "you want to know now for this case', but we have to look at the long term ramifications so it is much bigger than one man, that sort of shit.
Gorsuch is anal but like Cavanaugh he didn't deny that the former president - who obviously isn't mentioned by name in the hearing, is accused of some bad shit. But, like Roberts, they wouldn't let the justice department lawyer or whoever he is; terrific lawyer, get into that.
Alito is scary right wing, like some old, ugly indignant right wing dinosaur straight out of 1950s America - chomping on about obscure aspects of the Constitution and what the what the founders meant, he certainly wouldn't let the justice department lawyer bring up specifics and shut down anything that could be construed as connected to current events or trump. Amy Coney Barret was more interesting, and seemed aghast once or twice, but only up to a point.
The three liberal justices, however, did not have a problem letting the lawyer be very specific about the unmentioned by name trump's crimes. Uncle Clarence didn't have much to say, which was wise, considering his wife's involvement in Jan 6, but he didn't give the impression that he would believe in blanket immunity for presidents or former presidents.
I didn't like Roberts' questions.
I don't think Trump is ever going to get blanket immunity granted to him by the Supreme Court of America, but 1: it could be too late to stop trump by the time they rule or 2: they could kick it back to the lower court; which would also make it too late.
Or 3: They recognize the urgency of the situation and move to rule against trump's immunity claim swiftly.
We must hope for 3, but I have my doubts that this is going to happen.
Much respect to Ketanji Brown Jackson, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan. They ask the tough questions, they aren't afraid to say the quiet part out aloud (he's an existential threat) and they were direct and shrewd, focused and thoughtful in their questioning.
I shall go and have a look at what CNN are saying about the hearing.
I have to wonder why no one else on the Politics Board would be interested in this Shays? Why read it about tomorrow and let some asshole partisan political pundit tell you what happened when you listen to the actual hearing and judge for yourself?
