JRM has admitted the rule change was introduced to try to help the Tories in elections. He claims it has backfired though and that older people have been more adversely affected than younger people .. and Tory support is higher among the old than the young. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-65599380

Reform UK is performing well, racking up an average vote share of between 14% and 15%. The party has pushed the Conservatives into third place in some areas, including Sunderland. However, it isn't fielding candidates everywhere - instead targeting Leave seats where its predecessors, the Brexit Party and UKIP, performed well - and has yet to win a seat or council for itself. "Close comparisons of change in vote share demonstrate that support for Reform is real and will hurt the Conservatives if played out at the next general election," Prof Thrasher said. news.sky.com/story/local-election-results-what-you-need-to-know-about-major-parties-wins-and-losses-overnight-13127901It’s only contesting 300 of the 2600 seats up for election. At time of posting we know the results of around a quarter of the 2600 seats.

He claims it has backfired though and that older people have been more adversely affected than younger people .. and Tory support is higher among the old than the young. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-65599380That is true, although most cotton tops are as daft as they want to be. At the polling station I saw one old dear showing what appeared to be her wedding photos as ID and clearly having a whale of a time. But with the Tories being so unpopular, Labour could have put up a scabby cat and the brothers and sisters would still have won.
This ID lark is a load of bollocks anyway. There have been a few cases of electoral fraud over the years, but nothing to get excited about. The problem is that you get people like JRM, who are excellent people in many ways, but who have the souls of born book keepers and who like things just so.Which resulted in me turning up at the polling station with a two decade old photo and the returning officer just waving me on.

You’ve gone senile. I would vote for a far-right party.

Whether I'm pleased or not doesn't matter much - it's the Britons who should be displeased. I just don't get why the other parties didn't just simply buy some thousands of print papers that covered the corruption (like bylinetimes) and just give it to those who still might be able to read by throwing these into letter boxes. What's going on there is basically corruption on the highest level in open sight. I recommend following the links given in that text snippet in the original article.

Reminds me of Poulson and Pottinger .. another scandal in NE England.

Reform caused damage Meanwhile, the Conservatives suffered another serious parliamentary by-election reverse in Blackpool South. The party’s support fell by as much as 32.1 points, the third biggest ever drop in Conservative support in a by-election. The party’s support has fallen by 25 points or more in no less than eight by-elections in this parliament. Much of the damage to the Conservatives’ fortunes in Blackpool appears to have been done by Reform, whose 17% of the vote is the party’s best result yet in a by-election. More broadly, Reform on average won 11% in the limited number of local council wards it contested, up from 5.5% last year. These extra votes seem to have been secured primarily at the Conservatives’ expense. Labour will take the results so far as further evidence that voters are looking for a change of government – including not least in parts of Britain that voted heavily for Brexit in 2016. In particular the party gained Hartlepool, where famously it lost a parliamentary by-election to Boris Johnson exactly three years ago. The Greens also have some cause for celebration. Not only have they gained seats, but their vote is up on last year and is on a par with their previous best local election performance in 2019. But the big message from the local ballot boxes is that the Conservatives remain in deep electoral trouble.

Noticed the Lib Dems have pipped the Tories for second place in terms of number of councillors (no idea about the vote share).

Just saw an interesting bit on Sky News.
In wards with a Muslim population of 20% or more, Labour’s share of the vote was down 18%.

I am a rock ribbed conservative so when I walked past the Tories canvassing for Susan Hall I thought no way and voted for Femy Amin of the Animal Welfare Party I'm confused. If you're so "rock ribbed" why flip off the Tories?
And I'm sure you know that any group of ne-er-do-wells called the "Animal Welfare Party" are a bunch of barefoot communist hippies who will shoot you for eating a roast beef sandwich!
