As a Yank putting in two cents, I tend to agree it's an outmoded institution that's probably better off cleared away. However there's always the bitter possibility that, rather than being disbursed to the public weal, the monies being thrown into the black hole of the monarchy will just be diverted into another black hole, or holes, equally wasteful and unproductive...a real danger in a democratic republic, as ours painfully demonstrates. And honestly, isn't the monarchy little more than a museum piece at this juncture anyway? Could it be appropriated a set amount annually as a sort of tourist attraction, sans any vestiges of political trappings? (And make it a given that the titled spongers will now have to earn their own keep going forward, as opposed to being the world's wealthiest welfare recipients.) Hard to know what answer is best, and of course it's for the British themselves to properly decide--but simply trading one set of evils for another likely enough set shouldn't be good enough for anyone.

I don't think that monarchy is the main problem. Many European states (Spain, Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, Norway) get along quite well with it - though they are not scandal-free.
But surely the "Crown" could be downsized a bit and some of the wealth given back to the people.
Seems that some nations like the UK and Belgium really need their monarchs for identification purposes. And some like Austria and Bavaria ( ;) ) need their replacement rituals...
