Still an entertaining sequel/prequel overall although it's not as good as the first and third Indiana Jones movies. But it seems a lot of fans would at least put it above "Crystal Skull" and "Dial of Destiny" at least. I appreciate the movie trying to be something different than just a "Raiders of the Lost Ark" rehash although it feels like it went a bit too far with the dark tone, graphic violence, child abuse, torture, etc. This movie had responsibility in creating the PG-13 rating as many film buffs know. Having a whiny, annoying character like Willie Scott doesn't help matters either. But at least we have Harrison Ford in fine form as Indiana Jones, entertaining action (mine cart chase for example), top production values (sets, cinematography, etc.), good score, etc. Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) - 2 out of 4 stars"Headache-inducing prequel to RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, but this time the 1930s archaeologist-adventurer has a weaker story and wimpier heroine. Re-creates (and outdoes) a bunch of great cliffhanger stunts, but never gives us a chance to breathe...and tries to top the snake scene in RAIDERS by coming up with a variety of new "gross-out" gags. Oscar winner for Visual Effects. Followed by INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE. Panavision."

I love it. The dark approach, the brutality of the action, the whole ‘evil Indy’ approach. There’s R-rated action movies that had been made today which can’t match the intensity of this film. I can kind of see why some people would get annoyed by Kate Capshaw’s performance. But she never bothered me. I think Short Round offers a good counterbalance as Indiana Jones’ sidekick.

Spielberg was less than pleased with this one, and said in an interview years later that he made Last Crusade in part to make up for Temple.

Agreed with all. I love it too. Pauline Kael, by the way, wrote a superb, typically Kaelian review of it in which she pointed out that, despite all the criticism of ToD’s “darkness,” it’s basically a kids’ movie:

Mola Ram is one of the greatest villains of all time, IMO.
Too bad some of the supporting characters like Short Round and Willie Scott are too annoying and bring the movie down.

Interesting trivia, the guy that played the Big Indian goon also played the big Nazi guy in Last Crusades that gets killed by the propeller

Inspite of its flaws, I still like it. My third favorite Indy movie.
