Just a wild guess: it will make it easier for the big clubs to stay longer in the competition and therefore make more money.

So do the losers of the play in legs get relegated to the Europa League or have they gotten rid of that entirely? Is the Europa League staying with 8 groups of 4 or expanding to this nonsense? How do they determine which 8 teams you play? Some really obvious questions not being asked by the Guardian there.
