Hard to believe that this seminal 80's album turns 40 on June 4th. Any fans of "Born in the U.S.A." by Bruce Springsteen? This is the album that made Bruce a major star and household name thanks to radio and MTV. Plenty of memorable songs like the title track Born in the U.S.A., Glory Days, Dancing in the Dark, I'm on Fire, etc.

I'm a fan, for sure. It's an album I take for granted because it exploded at the time, when I was a kid. If I were to try and think of a British equivalent it would be the album 'Brothers In Arms' (1985) by Dire Straits. 'Born In The U.S.A.' and 'Money For Nothing' must have had plenty of MTV airplay. These are mainstream, streamlined versions of what both bands had come to be known for and reaped commercial rewards.

I like the catchy singles, the emotional singles. Seems like most everything became a single with 'Born In The U.S.A.', even deep cuts like 'My Hometown'. What's also interesting is that the E Street Band had recorded 'The River' (1980) and Springsteen had retreated to make the stripped-down 'Nebraska' (1982). Then came this monster record with its musical refinement, big production and big sound. The follow-up, 'Tunnel Of Love' (1987), didn't disappoint.

'Born In The U.S.A.' isn't my favourite Springsteen album - not sure it would make my top 10 - but I like it, some songs more than others. I also enjoy hearing some of the songs live.

Here's four former E Street Band members who left in the 1970s but went on to have interesting careers in music ....
Drummer Vini 'Mad Dog' Lopez (left but continued performing with Jersey groups including the Lord Gunner Group, the Shakes & the Wheels)
Violinist Tzruya 'Suki' Lahav (poet and music teacher who left to become one of Israel's most prominent lyricists)
Keyboardist David Sancious (left to form jazz fusion band Tone and work as a session pianist)
Drummer Ernest Carter (left to form jazz fusion band Tone and work as a touring and session drummer)
