Expected goals: Expected goals (xG) Expected goals (xG) measures the quality of a chance by calculating the likelihood it will be scored from a particular position on the pitch during a particular phase of play. This value is based on several factors from before the shot was taken. xG is measured on a scale between zero and one, where zero represents a chance that is impossible to score and one represents a chance a player would be expected to score every single time. We know that a chance from the half-way line isn't as likely to result in a goal as a chance from inside the box. With xG, we can actually quantify how likely a player is to score from each of these situations. For example, suppose the chance from inside the box with a given set of pre-shot characteristics was worth 0.1 xG. This means that an average player would be expected to score one goal from every ten shots in this situation or 10 per cent of the time. Some of the most important variables are listed below: Distance to goal Angle to goal One-on-one Big chance Body part (such as header or foot) Type of assist (such as through ball, cross, pull-back) Pattern of play (such as open play, fast break, direct free kick, corner kick or throw-in) Some situations are particularly unique and these are modelled independently. Penalties are given a constant value, corresponding to their overall conversion rate (0.79 xG), direct free-kicks have their own model and headed chances are valued differently for set-pieces and open play. www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12829539/expected-goals-expected-assists-pressures-carries-high-turnovers-and-more-advanced-stats-explainedI think I will pass. I've been a football fan for 45+ years without needing advanced statistics, I am pretty sure I can live out the remainder of my life without it. They give the Xg stats all the time in FM games. Means fuck all. If you get two highly unlikely goals and your opponent either misses 2 sitters or your keeper makes a brilliant save then I'm up 2-0 abd Xg is 0.2- 1.5 or something equally as unhelpful. At the end of the day I don't care how good the chances were, just that my players took them and I'm up 2-0.

Pretty good performance by Canada, hope they can keep it up. Canada has a very good team. They have to potential to make Football the main sport in Canada.
The United States will have that as well sooner or later.

Argentina furious with ‘disaster’ pitch in Atlanta following Copa América win Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni expressed his unhappiness with the pitch at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium after his team’s 2-0 win over Canada in the Copa América opener on Thursday, saying it was unsuitable for this level of competition. The venue, which hosts matches for Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United and the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, usually has an artificial pitch but a temporary grass surface was installed ahead of the tournament opener. Argentina lacked their usual fluidity in the first half and looked vulnerable at times, much like their 2022 World Cup opener in Qatar where they were stunned 2-1 by Saudi Arabia. “The start looked like the match with Saudi Arabia, with the difference that we played on a more decent pitch that time,” Scaloni told reporters. “With all due respect, thank goodness we won. Otherwise, it would have been a cheap excuse. We have known for seven months that we are going to play here and they changed the turf two days ago. “It is not good for the show. It is not an excuse, the stadium is beautiful and with synthetic turf it must be spectacular, but with today’s turf it is not suitable for this kind of players.” Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez echoed his manager’s sentiments, telling TyC Sports: “Coming here against a strong Canada, with good forwards and on a field that is a disaster made it a little difficult for us. “We have to improve in that aspect. Otherwise, the Copa América will always be at a lower level than the European Championship.”…. www.theguardian.com/football/article/2024/jun/21/argentina-atlanta-pitch-copa-america-canada

However, having a synthetic pitch is absolutely ridiculous
That should never be alowed in top competition.

It is the main sport amongst youth, but hockey will always reign supreme here. Hockey will never win against Football's inevitable power. I'm sorry but this is nonsense. Soccer's junior numbers in Australia have been through the roof for decades and we've been hearing repeatedly that AFL, Rugby and cricket need to look out because the sleeping giants are coming! What's happened? A lot of people watch the National teams, some follow the big European leagues and the only people who follow the domestic competition are the ones who attend the games. In the meantime AFL, Rugby League and cricket are drawing huge crowds, record revenues and generally going from strength. Ice Hockey in Canada has nothing to fear from soccer.

Football is the best and most popular sport in the entire world by gigantic and legendary levels of distance.
It's not even comparable. Football will always win.
