Hugely overrated writer though. Inventing a fictional grimoire (Necronomicon) was a wonderfully clever idea that even had a big impact on 20th century occultism, but can't say he impressed me much as a fighter. then again he influenced people like Thomas Ligotti who is ten times the writer he was so who am I to judge.

I don't necessarily get the impression that he's overrated as a writer, just that he's more celebrated for what he refined and gave to the world of fantasy and horror. So much of the discussion I've read about him pretty quickly gets around to mentioning that his writing is not that great (and considered antiquarian even in his time) but I can't really come down on him too hard. I've been trying to make my way through his works. He can be winding, boring, and frustrating at times, but I mostly enjoy it. Though he himself was influenced heavily at times by authors before him, I love all that he created and added to the world of literary horror and weird fiction. I always love seeing anything even vaguely Lovecraftian. As much as I adore the idea of a big screen Cthulhu film someday, it would probably be a terrible mistake. And thanks for the video, Lilith!
