Her mother was forced to not deliver. The nurse actually kept Rosemary pressed inside her mother's vaginal canal forbidding her from giving birth until the obstetrician showed up. She showed signs of having mental instability, being too active (hysteria), she was slow to ambulate and pick up on social cues. Of course, the solution? Lobotomy. Rosemary was never consulted, she was given a mild tranquilizer, and using a blunt dissecting tool, they did irreversible brain damage. At the time, a lobotomy was considered a "cure" because the patients would return "calm." She was sent to a "mental asylum" and written off, never to be seen, hidden away due to family embarrassment. Excuses were made for her absence, completely disregarding her mental capacity.

I never knew this about Rose. Sad but interesting story. Yes, indeed. There's a lot more extensive information, (books, articles, videos), that goes into a lot more detail than this little clip shows. It's sickening as well as heart-breaking. In such a grand scheme of time, it really wasn't that long ago when families "sent away" the embarrassments, those with physical or mental disabilities. They were often subjected to such humiliating treatment. Remember that recent event about the girl who was described as "comatose" but was in actuality non-responsive, physically and mentally disabled, and she got pregnant from a nurse, which uncovered additional sexual and physical abuse going on in that facility? And to think it happens less now because we no longer tolerate what used to be accepted. The more I read up on Rosemary, it was so disheartening, so confusing, and it made me angry and disgusted to know how she was treated. It also creeped me out, how the nurse "forbid" her mother from delivering by blocking her mother's vaginal canal, forcing Rosemary to stay compressed after crowning. It's just horrible to imagine.
