Richard Samet "Kinky" Friedman (October 31, 1944 – June 2024)
(New York Times) Kinky Friedman, a singer, songwriter, humorist and sometime politician who with his band, the Texas Jewboys, developed an ardent following among alt-country music fans with songs like “They Ain’t Makin' Jews Like Jesus Anymore” — and whose biting cultural commentary earned him comparisons with Will Rogers and Mark Twain — died on Wednesday at his ranch near Austin, Texas. He was 79.
He also had a short political career, running unsuccessfully running for governor of Texas with slogans like “How Hard Can It Be” and “Why The Hell Not.” After running for governor, he ran for mayor of Kerrville, Texas where his home was at the time. He lost that one, too - or as he said at the time, "They returned me to the public sector" - maybe because he referred to the citizens as "Kerrverts."
He also authored a series of 18 mystery novels based on the time he spent in New York City. He made himself the amateur detective in the stories. I have read many of them and they were pretty good.
