Gareth Southgate has announced he has stepped down as England’s manager after eight years. The Football Association had hoped he would extend his contract after he led the team to the final of Euro 2024 but Southgate has decided to seek a new challenge. “As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England,” Southgate said. “It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all. But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.” The 53-year-old is England’s most successful manager in terms of consistent major tournament performance. England also reached the European Championship final in 2021, losing to Italy, and a World Cup semi-final in 2018, when they were beaten by Croatia. In his other World Cup, the team were eliminated by France in the quarter-finals. www.theguardian.com/football/article/2024/jul/16/gareth-southgate-resigns-as-england-manager-after-euro-2024-final-defeat

His statement was a bit mealy-mouthed, he should have said "we have the best fans in the world apart from those who throw beer over me, boo taking the knee and abuse our own players".

He deserves a lot of credit having turned England around (2016 was perhaps the nadir of modern England fandom) but it's clear that a new tactical approach was needed to take the team to the next level. They were consistently second-best whenever they came up against a quality side and they made it through Euro 2024 on luck alone. Not a recipe for success.
The next hire is vital, however. Potter, maybe. Howe, I don't know...

Southgate has found a perfect moment to let it go. Being in the crosshair of fan flak for so long surely has reduced his life expancy. Carl LaFongKlopp has just started to have a normal life and You want to take that away from him?

He didn't deserve having beer thrown over him. Nor did his players deserve the abuse they got for taking the knee or missing penalties. I'm not denying that his limits as a manager have fairly clearly been reached, but the aggressive, whiny entitlement of so many of his critics amongst the fans and in the press was unwarranted. If not unexpected.

Tuchel's name has been bandied about - he'd be a good choice if the FA could seal the deal.

I know a week is a long time in politics and deflection alike, but three years isn't that long to me, or to anyone else who can, for example, recall watching The Black And White Minstrel Show on tv. The opposition to taking the knee, the form it takes, and those who do so, are a very strong indication of how far our society still has to go, IMO.

Just looked it up, 46 years ago. I wouldn’t boo anyone taking the knee, but I still think it’s a bit silly.
