I say it would be Chicago.
If you listen to their first 5 albums you will hear music at least as good as the Beatles imho.
Especially their first album.

Can't comment, not familiar with Chicago. I find it very interesting that if you look at the greatest selling artists of all time, the American entries are nearly all solo artists while the British entries are almost all bands. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_music_artists

For me, the Beatles are truly iconic, but only remain interesting from Help (1965) through Let it Be (1970). I think Bob Dylan surpasses them in iconic status, although Dylan isn't a band, he's just Bob Dylan.
On a lighter note (half seriously) my American band choice would be Faith No More. Pearl Jam definitely gets some consideration, but while Eddie Vedder would be an interesting and cool guy to hang out with, he's no intellectual giant.
