The movie that began the long downward spiral of the career of writer/director M. Night Shyamalan. I haven't seen this movie, but according to many, it seems like he finally tripped over his own feet on this film with trying to keep one-upping his "twist" storytelling with every new film. Sounds like a decent cast though at least, and I'll be forever grateful to M. Night for first blessing the movie world with the talent and beauty of Bryce Dallas Howard with this movie. Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review: The Village (2004) - 1.5 out of 4 stars"Somber, straight-faced story about a sequestered community that lives a simple, ascetic life, surrounded by woods where "those we don't speak of" pose a constant threat. One young man (Phoenix) proposes venturing though the woods to "the towns" to get badly needed medicine, but the elders will not hear of it. Evolves into self-parody at some point before becoming downright ridiculous. Impressive only as a showcase for newcomer Howard (daughter of Ron)."

Genuinely terrifying on the first watch. No replay value though.

I get why the ending annoyed people. But I never hated the movie. There is some great work in the first two-thirds.

To give The Village a *1/2 rating is being generous. What a travesty of a movie this was. Boring, not scary at all, and a really stupid twist ending.

Oh. I think it’s pretty great. My only major criticisms would be that Shyamalan (1) reveals the twist too early and (2) explains too much at the end. I wish he would have explained nothing in words and let the images do all the talking. But that’s… all I can think of by way of criticism.
But then I think Shyamalan had a great stretch from The Sixth Sense to this, with my favorite being the now-much-criticized Signs. “Masterpiece” is such an overused word, but I think Signs does such a good, old-fashioned job of inflecting themes and blockbuster plot points to achieve a cohesive whole. I both enjoy and admire it deeply.
Lady in the Water, a pure vanity project from a man who has always seemed vain (the weakest things about his movies are always his own performances), is the one where I think he went off-track.

For me, the twist ending was the best part of the movie. It’s the first 2/3 of the movie that is mediocre. Overall, I thought the movie was just okay.

It’s shite ..though unintentionally humorous in parts.
One of the worst directors of the last twenty five years. Needs to fuck off out of it!

I watched 'Old' last night. Like some of his other it has shit acting and dialogue. Yet for some reason I keep watching them.
