Real Madrid have just defeated Atalanta 2-0 to win the UEFA Super Cup with Mbappe scoring on his Real debut.
We're into the late qualifying stages in the UEL and UECL. CL group stage is a real clusterfuck this year. I'm highly sceptical but we'll see.

Might have been quicker to play golden goal to a finish! 34 penalties? That's ridic!

Inter stay strong above Serie A chaos with 14 new managers below them The managerial mix-up in Italy poses questions but with Simone Inzaghi staying put, Inter are still the team to beat www.theguardian.com/football/article/2024/aug/16/inter-stay-strong-as-serie-a-gets-a-facelift-with-14-new-managerial-hiresThe faces are familiar, but the places are all jumbled up. To preview this Serie A season feels like having a gossipy catchup with friends who lost track of each other’s lives. Remember how Thiago Motta swept Bologna off to Europe? Oh, that’s over: he’s with Juventus now. So Bologna got together with Vincenzo Italiano, after he left Fiorentina. They turned to Raffaele Palladino but that left Monza with nobody, until, of all people, Alessandro Nesta shows up on the scene. Please, we haven’t even got to the juicy part. Antonio Conte, he’s back. And get this, he’s with Napoli. We could go on. Thirteen out of 20 Serie A clubs begin this season with a new manager – 14 if you include Cesc Fàbregas, who served as Osian Roberts’s No 2 at Como for the second half of last season while he completed his coaching qualifications. Ten hires came directly from another Italian team. Amid so much change, the relationship between the reigning champions Internazionale and their manager Simone Inzaghi looks stronger than ever. They were rumoured to be close to a breakup in the spring of 2023, before their run to the Champions League final set them back on track. Inter finished last season 19 points clear atop Serie A, adding a second gold star to their club badge. No team has won consecutive Scudetti since Juventus’s nine-year streak came to an end in 2020 but Inter are well positioned to try. This is the first summer of Inzaghi’s tenure that no regular starters have departed. Instead, Inter have added depth in midfield and attack with the free transfer signings of Piotr Zielinski and Mehdi Taremi. …

We love a fractious manager/owner scenario over here, but Napoli could be next level crazy this season.
Both De Laurentiis and Conte could start a fight in a phone box, and Naples now have an owner with pretty much the most notorious hair trigger temper in all sports, let alone Serie A (which would be saying something in itself) with the stroppiest, 12-year-old-hissy-fit manager going.
Add to this Conte will serve up football that will make Allegri's Juve of last year look like Cruyfs Barcelona — to 60,000 rabid partenopei before bluntly telling him they are lucky to have his genius even considering coaching them, oh and BTW Aurelio, I need you to buy me 27 ageing ex-Premier League midfielders on 200 grand a week each this winter window or I'm off, because what do you expect me do do with this pile of shit, AKA my players and this club?
As you can probably tell, I'm an Inter fan, looks like the Pazza tag may no longer belong to us
Anyways Nicky, as ever, one of the best things about this season, will be your writing and reports!
a presto!

Ding Dong match day one game in the Europa League. AZ and Elfsborg exchanging leads before the home team won it with a penalty in Alkmaar.
Man U are about where they belong if they can't beat Twente at home. Brilliant goal by the visitors to tie it.
Bodo Glimt beating Porto is a bit of a turn up in my book.
Gers up tomorrow playing Malmo in Sweden.

Gers up 2-0 late in Sweden. Should be up 6-0. Their problems converting chances in the SPFL have gone over to the UEL.

Moi, je ne regrette rien...
Apart from missing the BTL comments enabled on the Graun's match report. The delusion, as ever, is strong over there.
