#5. Port Adelaide vs Collingwood 2002.
Nothing quite like a Friday night upset which flips the entire finals series on its head and that's exactly what happened here as a hopelessly out of form Collingwood knocked off the minor Premiers 108-95 at Football Park in Adelaide. Collingwood started well, with 5 of the first 6 goals and were able to hold Port at an arm's length most of the night. The Power finally made their move in the last quarter getting within 6. But an Alan Didak poster made it a two possession game. A minute later Chris Tarrant successfully blocked for Leon Davis to run into an open goal and, in the words of Pies premiership player Michael Christian on commentary "The Pies are through to the Preliminary Final! What an epic win by Collingwood!!!" Yep.
#4. Carlton v Melbourne 2000
Gaving finished a clear second, Carlton were short priced favourites to defeat Melbourne and, like Collingwood in the first game, the Blues jumped out of the blocks and led by 3-5 goals for most of the first three quarters to lead by 21 going into the last. But in that last quarter Shane Woewoedin inspired the Dees with rookie Cameron Bruce kicking 3 goals as Melbourne took a 9 point lead. Carlton came back with 2 quick goals to lead once again. But Bruce put Melbourne back in front. Neitz kicked another and the Dees were off to the Prelim with a 96-87 win.
#3 Geelong v Fremantle 2013
Few things more fulfilling in life then watching a team bleat for years, I'm spite of 3 premierships about how unfair it is they can't play a final at their home ground only to finally get one, assume that it's a fait accompli, and then get their pants pulled down on national television and that's exactly what happened here. Starter well enough for the Cats as they led by 13 at quarter time but the Dockers took the lead with a 5 goals to 2 second quarter. The game see sawed from there with the Dockers going into the last quarter with a narrow lead. So the Geelong team overran them in front of their roaring faithful you may ask? Of course not! Inspired by veteran Matthew Pavlich and young gun Nate Fyfe the Dockers scored the only 2 goals of the last quarter to win 87-72 in what remains their greatest ever victory.
#2 Geelong v Hawthorn 2016
If you have a bad memory you're probably wondering what can possibly top a match from arguably the greatest rivalry of the modern era decided after the siren in a result that ended the Hawthorn dynasty but I think I've got it covered. The main thing you need to know here is that 3x defending premiers Hawthorn had often looked a shell of themselves over the course of the season, but were winning on muscle memory. Just doing enough late to pull out games. It looked like they were going to do it again on this night (Bruce McAvaney even said it on commentary) when reliable ser shot Isaac Smith lined up 40 metres out on a slight angle to kick after the siren. But he didn't hit it well and the ball floated wide right. Geelong were through with an 85-83 win.
#1 West Coast vs Sydney 2006
The reason why there's an argument about Geelong v Hawthorn being the greatest modern rivalry is because this rivalry existed. From 2005-2007 these two teams were inseperable, always trading results with no blow outs. And thus game was the peak to this point. The game was tight all night with Sydney's half time lead of 15 the game high. The last quarter was insane. 6 goals. 6 lead changes. It looked like the Eagles were going to slay their metaphorical dragon when Armstrong gave them the lead with less than 5 minutes left, but then came one of the great team goals. Luke Ablett winning the ball under pressure in the Swans back line, they eventually moved forward with a chain of risky hand passes. Fosdike found space in the middle and kicked to Barry Hall in the forward line. Eagles defender Bandield was able to get his fist to it only to see the ball sail over the head of his team mate Stephen Glass for Swans forward Michael O'Loughlin to run onto and kick the winning goal. Swans won 85-84 and now had the rail's run to the granny while West Coast would have to go through Adelaide. The rivalry would peak 3 weeks later in the Grand Final as the result was reversed: Eagles by a point.
