The Dutch international left Athletico Madrid to sign with Corinthians in a rare case of a top European player going to play club football in South America.
Corinthians is one of the country's most popular clubs but they are drowning in debt and in real risk of relegation this year. The new arrival will only exacerbate the club's precarious situation. If financial fair play rules were applied in Brazilian football, the signing would certainly not have been permitted to go ahead.
