Sharks couldn't have looked much more uninspiring in victory last week. Penrith looked downright unassailable in their QF win over the Roosters. This looks a lay down misere but they're often the ones that shock you. The Gorilla's off the back for Cronulla and this is a free swing. Still, I'll back the Panthers until someone beats them.

There was a piece in the Graun today about PNG getting an NRL team. How will that work?

There was a piece in the Graun today about PNG getting an NRL team. How will that work? I'm pretty sceptical myself. It's a lot different to NZ where you can travel to and from with similar ease to WA or Victoria. PNG's a poor country so they won't be based there (NT or far north QLD from what I can gather). So they'll need to convince young fellas to live in the far north of Australia most of the year while spending every second week in a developing country. If the NRL are willing to invest in top notch facilities that would make it easier but wouldn't really be fair on the other 18 clubs (a Perth team will come in beforehand) who are expectedto buuld and maintaintheir own training facilities. Then there's the travel. Only thing they really have going big time is a fanatucal population to povide a player base, but It's not going to be easy at all.

Penrith win and win easily. By 16.
I can’t add too much more to the PNG NRL team discussion except that there is a very much the perception from the PNG side of the equation that by 2037 when the last of the Australian Government handout has been spent, the side will be populated almost exclusively by local players with a handful of players from places like Fiji, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands etc. They don’t expect too many ‘Anglo’ or even ‘Poly’ players to go up there to play, even in their inaugural season. They are happy to cop the licks and losses early on, but to build the club up from the ground on locals.

It was comfortable in the end but the Sharks were more competitive then I expected. They were also helped by some uncharacteristic errors from the champs. Tremors late with Cleary going for his shoulder after a tackle, but he made 2 more subsequently and left the game with about 7 minutes left.

Yeah - the needles only last so long. Cronulla were good. They just aren’t quite at the same calibre as the champs.
