Here we go! Easily the best match up of the 4 possible going into the penultimate weekend. NSW v QLD. No Victorian teams to muddy up the neutrality of the venue. And both have their share of demons having lost the last two GFs between them. Swans had a brutal game in week one, enjoyed a week off and easily went past Port. Brisbane had a week off against Carlton in week one and then 2 brutal games in a row to get here.
Sydney will be looking for revenge for Fitzroy's 1 point win in the 1899 decider. A wound that still cuts deep (not as deep as Souths win by forfeit over Balmain in 1909 but pretty deep!).

The darkest day in Sports history. 18th September 1909.
Russell Crowe can jam his book of feuds far up his own arse. Souths literally lied to and betrayed Balmain and we given a premiership in the process. And us on the Black and Gold side of history will never, ever, forget this betrayal.
Anyway, Swans by 13.

Given the financial issues the NSWRL had when they first formed and farces like this, its amazing the league survived WW1, let alone gotten to where it is now: comfortably the 2nd biggest sport in the country and actually taking small bites out of AFL viewership.

And AFL related: congrats to former ABC commentator Alister Nicholson for a fantastic call of the Geelong/ Brisbane Preliminary Final with Luke Darcy. Why the fuck we end up with Brayshaw and BT calling the GF every year when there are at least half a dozen better callers on commercial radio (Whately, Russell, Hudson, Lane, Howard, Bennett) and at least two on their own network, staggers me.

NRL is much the same. The pelicans commentating on Ch9 are easily the worst crew in the game. Fox has a slew of great callers and radio has quite a number too. Top of the pile is Dan Ginnane and Andrew Moore. James Graham and Michael Ennis are very good colour guys, as is Luke Lewis. And the best host by the length of the straight is Yvonne Sampson.

Carlton captain Patty Cripps wins the Brownlow with 45 votes from Collingwood's Nick Daicos. Daicos scored 38, the 2nd highest vote tally in history. Previous record was 36. I'm sorry, but both those vote tallies are horse shit. This was a year with no clear stand outs and 2 guys polled more than Dustin Martin in 2017 or Patrick Dangerfield in 2016 when both guys absolutely dominated the season.

Chris Fagan wins his 2nd Ciach of the Year award ahead of John Longmire and Sam Mitchell. Richly deserved for taking a team that was winless after 4 games to a Grand Final. I don't think it will be the only medal he'll beat Horse out for this week...

Funniest AFL story of the week: Luke Darcy is retiring from football media because he doesn't want to work with Kane Cornes. He's walking out on 7 and sitting out his contract.

Can we please take a supreme court injunction out on Sydney to prevent them playing in Grand Finals? Another thoroughly embarrassing performance from the Swans. Playing a non-Victorian team who had to play an extra game to get there this is easily the worst of their 4 losses since 2012.

Lions win 120-60. Chris Fagan becomes the AFL's oldest premiership coach. Swans coach John Longmire's legacy is in tatters as he drops to 1-4 in Grand Finals with three of those losses no shows. An unmitigated disaster for the Swans. Looks an even worse wasted opportunity for Port and as for GWS: had both these teams on ice and let them go.
Will Ashcroft, a 20yo in his second season, wins the Norm Smith and my work is done.
So a poor end to an interesting season. Congrats Brisbane. Fuck off Sydney.
