If there's one thing that the Duke excelled in, it's FUN MOVIES. No one starred in more FUN FILMS than John Wayne.
A lot of people starred in better films, and more meaningful films, and so forth, but for sheer FUN, the Duke wins the contest.
So, my pick isn't OFFICIAL this time, because people will have their own FUN lists of John Wayne movies, but it's my list.
I don't have many of the ones that were mostly comedies: Hatari, North to Alaska, McClintock, Donavan's Reef, The Undefeated just weren't funny enough, and not that watchable for me.
The countdown:
10. The Green Berets. A totally style over substance movie with many comic relief characters, some of whom die unfortunate "pathos" deaths. Mike Henry's theatrical run in with four evil enemy soldiers is pure fun style. We also get Sulu and Detective Yemana.
9. Tall in the Saddle. An early Duke movie. The hot babe who comes at him with a gun is super fun, and the duke is fun in the way that he handles her. My most fun scene was her entrance.
8. True Grit. Considered to be his best film by many critics, it just comes in 8th place for "fun", but it's fun. How can you not like this one eyed fat man and the Texas Ranger who saves his life twice, once after the Ranger was dead? Maybe the most fun part was when Rooster testified in court about the men he shot.
7. El Dorado. The wildcat girl is totally sexy and fun. She shoots the duke, but she's okay. We get the most famous knife throw in film history with the big scene that introduces "Mississippi", but I still say he and Diamond were card cheats. Lots of fun in this one.
6. Rio Lobo-the total guy movie. Total non stop, mindless action, and the most gorgeous harem of babes you will find in any John Wayne movie. The best line is a "fourth wall" line involving a dentist and the duke.
5. Fort Apache=one of the three acclaimed classic on this list. The NCOs make this a super fun movie. Maybe the most fun part is when the four sergeants have to "destroy" the rotten whiskey. You can guess how they do that.
4. The Commancheros-an underrated classic that is acutally Dante's Divine Comedy, as two "frenemies" make a visit into Hell. Only Wayne and Whitman make this a "fun" visit to Hell. The best line ever in any John Wayne movie is in this one. "Don't make a habit of saying that too often, and once more will be too often'.
3. The Searchers. Oneof the ones that many consider his best film, and it's a classic. The little subtleties make this super fun, and gives us the appearance of action and animation even when it isn't action. When Ken Curtis and Jeff Hunter prepare for their friendly fight, the scens with Hank Worden, the boisterousness of Ward Bond. One of the best Duke films ever, and also a fun one. Hank Worden provides the most fun parts.
2. The War Wagon. Sheer fun. It's clear from the start that Kirk Douglas never really wants to kill John Wayne, making this one of the best "frenemy" movies ever. Robert Walker and Howard Keel provide extra comedy. And of course, great lines like "mine hit the ground first" followed by "mine was taller", and my favorite from the film where the duke gets his gun back from the guy who stole it, and says "the bullets in here belong to him. Tell him he can come and get them, any time".
1. BIG JAKE-you can't get more fun than this. "Well, son, since you haven't learned to respect your elders, its' time that you learned to respect your betters". "The next time....the next time I won't take off my goggles". And of course, this isn't the first time that Richard Boone thought a payment chest would contain riches (HOMBRE).
