Atlético from Belo Horizonte and Botafogo from Rio dispatched River Plate and Peñarol respectively to reach the Libertadores final, to be played in a single match at the end of November in Buenos Aires. Atlético won the title once, in 2013. Botafogo had never reached the final before this year – they are the only of the 12 traditional “big clubs” that have never won the Libertadores.
This will be the sixth year in a row that a Brazilian team wins the premier South American championship.
