Wow! This is the film version of the original cliff-hanger 15-minute episodes I used to watch when I was a boy.
BBC2, Friday evenings, 7pm, when I got home from school.

I have two sets of DVDs of Flash Gordon stories. Quite interesting and Dale Arden was very nice.

I love the Flash Gordon serials from the '30's with Buster Crabbe, Charles Middleton, Frank Shannon, and the entire cast. To this day I find the contrasts superlative and intriguing - e.g. the medieval swords and armor contrasted with the super high tech sci-fi weaponry and rocket ships, and the classical background music (Liszt's Les Prelude, particularly) which so effectively enhances the action, drama and sense of mystery and unknown of the goings-on. For all the high tech special effects of today, they can't, and don't make them like this any more. Those were the days . . . .

This is very different to films these days.
Within 16 minutes of starting, we have had:
- the opening titles - the hero and heroine meeting on a plane - a plane crash - various world catastrophes - the two survivors finding the Doc's laboratory - the Doc convincing them that is it a rogue planet that is attacking Earth - the Doc convincing them to go into space to defeat this planet - them taking off in the spaceship - flying through space for quite a long distance - landing on the planet and escaping giant lizards - being caught by Ming's guards - being brought before Ming and Flash being sentenced to fight in the arena - Ming's daughter deciding to rescue Flash - Ming's daughter rescuing Flash - them finding their way into the underground caves and evading Ming's guards
All of this in 16 minutes, people.
They don't make shit like this anymore.

Never liked him. Seemed a bit of a cunt. For saving the Earth? Nah, just in general. He was no Dick Barton.
