Philip. K. Dick is a terrible writer.
His ideas are interesting by the prose is dry as fuck.

Some of the "old guard" are still the best: Isaac Asimov, Frank Herbert, Robert Heinlein, Arthur C Clarke
...but I'd definitely add the following to that pantheon as well: Gene Wolfe, M. John Harrison
and of current authors that have written stuff I like... Dan Simmons (just for the Hyperion Saga), Peter F Hamilton (first 2 Commonwealth novels) and Neal Stephenson (Anathem, Snow Crash)
