Most exciting, enjoyable book I've read in a long time. The author's job was to build a railway between Mombasa and Nairobi, but the men kept getting eaten by a pair of cunning, stealthy man eating lions. The author had to shoot them, which he did, but not before having some very close shaves himself.
It goes on to tell about many of the other animals he shot, but it was anything but all one way. Several of the author's friends died horribly, mainly from lions but also crocodiles, hippo, rhino etc. I was put in mind of this book by the story about the hunter gored to death by the deer he thought he had killed.

I've heard of that, may even have read it in my youth. I am familiar with the story, for sure. If you like African-set factual stories, I recommend this: 1960's camel train journey across northern Kenya. No being eaten by lions, more survival stories back when everything was completely remote. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Hillaby

I looked Hillaby up. All his books seem to have gone out of print decades ago.
And he married for the first time at age 64. Unusual.
