Define Western. Is Outland (1981) a Western? It's like HIGH NOON set in outer space, but for more it's not a "western", just like I don't think No Country for Old Men or Rancho Deluxe are westerns , certainly not in the traditional sense. But they are similar to the genre thematically. and even stylistically: not so so much Outland - it does have a sheriff, though. HUD, like No Country For Old Men, is a great film, but I don't think of it as a western. Neither do I classify THE MISFITS as a western. Soldier Blue and A Man Called Horse are westers, so is THE GREY FOX, just. If I was going to out of the box I might throw Dead Man in as a western, cool film a great cast. And where do we classify Quentin Tarantino's DJANGO UNCHAINED and THE HATEFUL EIGHT? Teen comedies.

drystyxgood list for a start (You clearly put a lot of thought into it) but next time do not only exclude the "fun westerns" (so "Lone Ranger" also doesn't belong into that list....) but also the "spaghetti westerns" bc both deserve polls of their own. I did like that You tried diversity, still I miss - "Heaven's Gate" / "Johnny Guitar" / "Dead Man" in that list bc all three were completely different to others before. Next time You compose such a list it would be great to sort it by year completely.

I’m not a western fan and have only seen a handful of those. It seems to me though, that real goodies are missing.

Without The Good the Bad and the Ugly, High Plains Drifter and Pale Rider this poll is meaningless.
And you forgot Brokeback Mountain too.
I refuse to vote.
Yes, for hardcore western fans, that list is up for much contention. I saw True Grit - ‘69 the other day. Have seen before and had forgotten how enjoyable it was. Beautifully shot as well. A classic!

This list has a variety of types. From action to drama to spaghetti, but all are classics. If you like Westerns, your Westerns are here. If your Westerns aren't here, then you don't like Westerns. I didn't have room for the super Western comedies like Blazing Saddles and Cat Ballou. Those will go on a comedy list any way. Pick up to 20. These are all super classic Westerns, so you will be hard pressed to keep it down to 20. No Tombstone? ”I’ll be your Huckleberry.”

If one really wanted to bend the rules then Billy Jack could fall into that category. And while we're at it so could Blazing Saddles.

three words.... "we want Angel" "If they move, kill 'em!" "We all dream of being a child again, even the worst of us. Perhaps the worst most of all."

Not on the list, and not sure if it is any good today (a spaghetti western so maybe supposed to be bad in a way), but “A Bullet for Sandoval” left a lasting impression on me a a very young kid (particularly the ending). Only saw it once in the early 70’s and still remember it vaguely to this day.
Need to see if I can dig it up somewhere and see it again.
