They should refer to it properly (Down's Syndrome) instead of using a belittler. Down's Syndrome can be detected early in a pregnancy. Richard Dawkins made controversial comments about how it was "immoral" not to terminate a pregnancy if Down's Syndrome is detected. www.theguardian.com/science/2014/aug/21/richard-dawkins-immoral-not-to-abort-a-downs-syndrome-foetusHe later apologized to the woman for causing her distress but he did not change his position. He stated that it is best for the family. His comments were meant to prevent suffering. Search for "Richard Dawkins Down's Syndrome" if you want more info on his opinion. Was Richard Dawkins correct? Not sure if people are using a "belittler" or just informal speech. What are you going to do with a mongoloid? It must be very trying to raise that potato head. I'm not sure why the op posted this on the "Pleasant Conversation" board. I hope my reply was pleasant. Dawkins was wrong, I think that there are many diseases where if they can be detected the argument could apply as the quality of life is so terrible. I live near a teaching facility/centre that caters for the illness (if you choose to call it that) and my experience is that sufferers are wonderful open and happy people.Any move to financially enrich their lives are to be welcomed.

There's some absolutely disgraceful language on this thread. "Mongoloid", "potato head", "retard".... Get some manners. Well, if they're retards, they can't figure out how to post here. Here's a ill-mannered double disgraceful whammy.

There was a neo-Nazi skinhead band in Sweden that made a song titled "I Hate Mongoloids", and the singer had also tattooed it onto himself. Apparently, a story goes that he once tried to join a gang of bikers and the girlfriend of the leader happened to have a brother who was mentally challenged. Legend says that he received the beating of his lifetime.

Absolutely disgusting, dehumanizing speech has only continued on this thread. If you've quote-replied to me and I have not to you, it's because your replies were in fact not pleasant and your hate is not some abstract "anti-PC" edginess, it serves in a very real way to humiliate, demean and shame actual people.

If they were kids I'd have posted this video and walked away.

Same argument applies to abortion. Actually, you don't want to do any of these things for un-aborted babies. After lobbying the government, listening to issues from people with Down's syndrome and gaining the support of MPs, the Down Syndrome Act has been given Royal Assent.
The Act will give people with Down's syndrome better rights with housing, education, social care and healthcare.
My comment was in response to the statement: "If we can't help the more vulnerable members of society, then we ain't worth our weight in salt."

They should refer to it properly (Down's Syndrome) instead of using a belittler. Cut the bullshit and just go back to Mongoloid! In 1961, a group of nineteen scientists suggested that "mongolism" had "misleading connotations" and had become "an embarrassing term". The World Health Organization (WHO) dropped the term in 1965 after a request by the delegation from the Mongolian People's Republic. While the term mongoloid (also mongolism, Mongolian imbecility or idiocy) continued to be used until the early 1980s, it is now considered unacceptable and is no longer in common use. I suppose it’s not that much different from homosexuals who object to being called gay.

So much talk about protecting the weakest among us, eh?

That's why I would never get in anybody's face and call them a "Mongoloid". But it's just a word. And the Mongolians were offended at being compared to people with Down Syndrome, not the other way around. So we were offending Mongolians, not some poor kid with a disability. Your umbrage is not about protecting disabled people at all.
I don't get upset at the word "faggot". There's only one slur I avoid and that's the 'n' word. Sorry, I won't lose sleep over most these slur words. And I've been called them.
I used the example of the song "Mongoloid" by Devo in this thread. I think Gwnyc only listens to Taylor Swift and Iggy Azalea. She doesn't seem to know about music made more than 10 years ago.
So I'll ask you since I know you're a bit more culturally savvy. Is the song "Mongoloid" offensive? I thought it's a rather nice story about how a person with Down Syndrome can live and work and be treated like any other man. Should the recording company change the name of that song? It's a punk classic.

I don't know if it relates much to Down Syndrome. It mentions the extra chromosome and that's it so I assume they used it because it sounds catchy. I wouldn't cancel the song but I wouldn't use it as an illustration of how the average person with Down Syndrome lives their life. I wonder why hats are so important.

After all, it is a name connected to how the person looks but I suppose Mongoloid is more catchy than Someone With Down Syndrome. I bet I’m the only one here who has ever seen an actor with Down syndrome play a murdered drug addict who bursts onstage and brutally collapses in front of his pregnant girlfriend. It was quite shocking.

It was quite shocking. Well I certainly understand why the name is offensive to Asians. And of course the healthcare industry was wise to drop it. But if using the term has the desired effect in writing, or in art, as in the song, then so be it - even if it's offensive. Sometimes writers want to be offensive. It's a legitimate objective in a free society.
I really do love that Devo song though. It's very existential. Just about everyday life of an everyday character.
I know there's one guy on FB who calls everyone "mongos". He's an ass, arse. But it is commonly used.
Kudos to that actor too!
