Australia absolutely boss Day 1, 327/3 at stumps (off only 85 overs despite an extra half hour added). Travis Head played a blinder, 146* off 156 with 22 4’s and 1 sixer. Steve Smith, played the perfect Test match knock - kept the good balls out, played with soft hands and punished the bad balls for 95* off 227.
The bowling was poor TBH - it was a bit pedestrian and a bit short of a good length. It took India far too long to try the short ball against Head (he looked far from comfortable until he uncorked the uppercut) and this plan to bowl into Smith’s pads with a packed on side stops boundaries, but he never looks like getting out. Rohit is far too defensive a captain in my book, and playing 4 quicks and not Ashwin was a mistake right from the off. Another case of hoping a green pitch and overcast morning gets wickets instead of good bowling…..

Game over day one. Head approaching 150, Smith 95no. India picked the wrong attack and probably the wrong decision to send Australia in (of course there may be an alternative universe where India batted first and were 5 down by lunch). Test showcase looking a non event.

"I think Smith's greatest asset has been convincing opposition captains and bowlers that you shouldn't bowl to him trying to hit the top of off." - Graeme Swann. Exhibit A of that today.

Hooley dooley! Australia win the day. Is this a six day match? This won't need 6 days. It'll be all over about halfway through Day 4.

The Indian batting line up is horrible, but one sided games like this (particularly a WTC Final), at a time when the format is under serious threat, is not what the game needs.

India aren’t too shabby. They are in the final after all. They defeated Australia last year. Maybe they aren’t as great away from home but your opinion of the Indian team is not accurate. Australia were 3 for 76 and if not for Travis Head we may have been rolled for a low score and be struggling to win.

Australia were 3 for 76 and if not for Travis Head we may have been rolled for a low score and be struggling to win. They won the recent series in India because Ashwin and Jadeja bowled out Australia cheaply and then Ashwin, Jadeja and Axar scored enough runs down the order to make that count. They won in Australia because of their pace bowling, a random hundred from Rahane (he's scored none since) and Risabh Pant's innings to save the Sydney test and won the Brisbane one. Kohli and Pujara have similar recent records to Dave Warner (ie: not good), Gill and Rahane have barely played a red ball game in the last two years, Bhagat is completely unremarkable with the stick and Jadeja doesn't have Ashwin or Axar to bat with in this game. I'd be surprised if they managed 200 in either innings unless Rohit scores 150.

Australia bowled out for 469 - about 50-75 short of what they would’ve really hoped for TBH.
India have come out blazing, 22 off the first 3 overs with neither Starc nor Cummins finding the right length and not a lot of sideways movement in the air or off the deck….

India dead in the water. 318 behind with 5 wickets in hand. Paying the price for too-clever-by-half selections and ignoring clear issues with their batting for too long.
Australia are a good team and have dominated this cycle. They're putting a deserved exclamation point on it here.

Australia will have to do something really spectacular to lose from here…. could’ve been so much worse for India too. Rahane LBW off a no ball, and Jadeja leading edged about 3 that could’ve gone anywhere but went into gaps. Jadeja’s wicket was a beautiful bit of spin bowling from Nathan Lyon. A bit of drift, loop, drop, turn - kisses the outside edge and a fine catch at slip. Chefs kiss…..

Rear guard from India. Australia shooting themselves in the foot by taking wickets from no balls. Thakur earning his dough. Rahane playing a class innings. May get a hundred. And they just burned a review on one Cummins wasn't sure about and Warner didn't like at all.
India should get the lead under 200 here. How far under is the question.

Australia throwing this away. What is it with Australia and tailenders ? Far too often this happens, get a team 5 or 6 down for about a hundred, and then cough up a ton partnership.

I just put my money on India. I don’t think they’ll win, but it will give me something to be happy about if Australia drop the ball.
