Not to mention the insipid poster art work, plagiarizing the original with an un-scary shadow image of a nun casting a cross as a shadow. Like WTF! The original had a little kid casting the shadow of a jackal. Lets hope they let this thing die. That would be a blessing. I don’t care much for religious institutions, but this film is claiming the evil of Catholicism as being the Anti-Christ. That just doesn’t work. While the cult has a lot to answer for, it’s just too preposterous with its anti-Catholic conspiracy/agenda.

The Sect (1991)A pretty young school teacher becomes the victim of a satanic conspiracy. This is a first-time viewing of this Italian horror movie, produced and cowritten by Dario Argento and directed by Argento protégé Michele Soavi. I thought maybe this would be an improvement over the mediocre The Church, another Argento-Soavi effort, but sadly that is not the case. It started off well and seemed like it was on to something interesting, but then gradually deteriorates with too many plot inconsistencies. The final scene is especially awful and didn't make any sense. Style-wise, Soavi does provide some nice visual touches (he definitely learned a thing or two from Argento) and often avoids graphic violence in favor of the bizarre. However, he gets a little too bizarre for this own good, and as a result certain scenes end up being downright silly. Soavi is certainly a talent to be reckoned with, but only if he had a more coherent script to work with. 4/10

Death Proof (2007)A psycho gets his thrills by stalking young women and killing them with his "death proof" stunt car. He eventually messes with the wrong gals. The second movie in the Robert Rodiguez/Quentin Tarantino Grindhouse collaboration. This review applies to the stand-alone, extended version of Grindhouse. Tarantino's Grindhouse contribution is the one that gets the most criticism, and I can understand why. People will say there's too much "chick talk" and that it is often dull. I agree that perhaps there could have been less of that chatter, and also I find the movie to be thinly-plotted. Yet even so, there's still much to be desired. It's extremely well acted by a great cast; Kurt Russell in particular is effectively creepy as the killer. There's a lot of eye-popping car stunts. The car murder sequence was especially shocking and thrilling, with the use of multiple camera angles and having body parts flying everywhere. No CGI to be found here, it's all practical work. Grindhouse is also a delight if you're a film buff. Lots of 1970s movie references. There's a wonderful tribute to The Bird With The Crystal Plumage with Morricone's score is playing while Russell is taking photographs of his next victims, just like in Argento's movie. And only a director like Tarantino can make watching the opening credits seem so enjoyable and exciting. Here Jack Nitzsche's score The Last Race plays while the credits roll, and it's very fitting. 7.5/10

Scale? I feel Maxxxine was very satisfying. Very good recreation of the 80s. The killer was.sort of pedestrian, but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Quiet Place Day One. Did not really like it at all Longlegs...Cage was.amazing. wow. The lead? She was off & threw the movie a bit for me. So it is 100% worth it for Cage. But I would say Maxxine, then Longlegs, then Quiet Place Day One. Watchers should have ended like 10 minutes earlier. The bus would have been a good stop point. Leave one wanting more, but I would slide that in ahead of Quiet Day & after Longlegs All 3 are behind Late Night with the Devil. That was probably the best I have seen this year. I brought my kid up on horror films (Halloween H20 was my kid's first R movie age 8) so now we see a lot of horror. Looks like Alien(whatever the new is) is next up, then Trap. Trap looks better for me. Not a fan of Alien outside of the 2nd with Lance Henriksen.

I enjoyed watching it and the 80' re-creation was exemplary, but I thought it was cramming too much into a fairly brisk runtime and ended up with a silly climax. Style over substance and it lacked a certain tension, especially being serial killer themed. The film didn't allow for the audience to empathize with any victims, not in compare to X and especially Pearl, and think 10 To Midnight, Eyes of a Stranger, Body Double and even numerous slashers films from the 80's. Mediocre to bad acting or not, they had a knack of getting you to care for what happens to them. I didn't really feel that in MaXXXine, not even for her gay black male friend that ran the video store. It was a bit flat in this department and they went for graphic and ott violence instead of real fear. When Maxine stommped on that muggers nuts, that is all you needed to see from an overhead shot. One knew what she was doing. You didn't need to see his crushed nuts fall out. X made a mistake here too. The producer gets stabbed in the eyes with a pitchfork in a brief quick shot, but they had to show his eyeballs next to him on the barn floor. It looks cheesy, fake and gratuitous.

Orgasmo (1969)(also known as Paranoia) A middle-aged rich widow (Carroll Baker) allows two young people to be part of her lonely life, but the two eventually hold the woman prisoner in her large estate. Could some gaslighting be afoot? This Italian-French co-production is not really a giallo as it's classified to be, certainly not in the traditional sense. It's a standard conspiracy thriller that's given a boost by director Umberto Lenzi's stylish touches and nice visuals. I was disappointed in the final scene and it had me wondering if it was just lazy writing. But in any case, for the most part this is a flavorful, enjoyable thriller that captures the free-spirit sensibilities of the 1960s. And it was rated X at the time of release. 7/10

Law Abiding Citizen (2009)A seemingly normal man seeks brutal vengeance against the two punks who murdered his wife and young daughter during a home invasion. Turns out he's also taking his revenge on the entire legal system. This is like Death Wish gone completely haywire. At first I completely sympathized with Shelton and I also admit I found it satisfying when he cleverly captured the worst of the two thugs and slowly killed him, and I'm sure many other viewers secretly felt the same way. But as the film goes along we learn that Shelton has actually been reduced to the level of Hannibal Lector/John Doe of Se7en territory, making him the true villain, and a very dangerous one. Naturally, he no longer had my sympathy. I found Law Abiding Citizen to be a very clever and captivating thriller that really packs a jolt, and the ultimate cat-and-mouse game. They way Shelton manipulates everybody and the judicial system is fascinating. Gerard Butler gives an outstanding performance as Shelton, and Jamie Foxx is also great as the prosecutor determined to stop Shelton. There are certain aspects of the script that may not come across as believable, maybe even far-fetched, but by then I was too absorbed with the story to really care about that. 7.5/10

1984 "A young couple is trapped in a remote town where a dangerous religious cult of children believes that everyone over age 18 must be killed." I might have seen this one before, if so I couldn't recall much. Seems rather lame by today's standards and might have been more frightening back then. Some of the special effects are rather awful. On the other hand it was made for under a million USD. The heroine was played by Linda Hamilton, before she became Sarah Connors of the Terminators. 5/10
